英闻天下——288 Hong Kong Disneyland Posts First Profit(在线收听) |
Hong Kong Disneyland's parade now has all the more reason for celebration, as the seven-year-old theme park has just announced its first ever net profit. The world's smallest Disneyland, which opened in September 2005, has posted its first net profit over over 100 million HK dollars in fiscal 2012.
Last year the theme park drew in a record attendance of 6.7 million people.
That is up 13 percent from the previous year.
Hong Kong Disneyland's managing director Andrew Kam says the resort has turned a corner.
"Now, obviously, we are all very excited about the milestone that we have achieved. This is a very significant milestone. We have seen the business has turned a corner. This is very, very encouraging and exciting among our leaders and our shareholders."
The theme park recently invested over 450 million US dollars to build three new attractions, including Asia's only Toy Story Land.
This is now said to be drawing in a lot more Hong Kong locals to the park, many of whom had intially been shunning the facility amid wide-spead complaints of long lines and a lack of enterainment options.
"It's definitely a good thing. For example, we come here every two to three months. If they have more new activities, we'll come more often. We can experience something new."
"I feel like I'm in a different world."
REPORTER ASKING: "What is this world like?"
"It's a world filled with joy."
Managing director Andrew Kam says the expansion is the key in helping them put their business operations into the black.
"Number one is our expansion. Our expansion is the most critical success factor that contributed to our result this year. Because of our expansions, we have expanded our capacities to receive more guests and this enabled us to further grow the volume of our business."
Nearly half of Hong Kong Disneyland's visitors are from the mainland.
Hong Kong locals currently make up a third of the guests.
However, Hong Kong Disneyland is eventually going to lose its status as China's only Disneyland.
A new Disneyland, which is roughly 3-times the size of the one in Hong Kong, is due to open in Shanghai by the end of 2015.
