Police seized 7.7 tons of marijuana during the operation "Republica 39", carried out between the municipalities of Tulua and Buga, who belonged to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas. The Director General of the National Police of Colombia, General Jose Roberto Leon Riano, said that 80 tons of marijuana and 36 tons of cocaine have been seized so far this year. "This marijuana belongs to the Sixth Front of the Revolutionary Armed forces of Colombia, for the micro-trafficking market that would provide seven million packets with a market value of around 14 billion pesos, or about 8 million US dollars."
The seizure was made in Caloto, which is 300 kilometers southeast of the Colombian capital, Bogota.
One of the two tankers was meant to be carrying milk and the other fuel, but police found more than 150 large sacks of drugs in the tanks.
The two drivers and one other person have been detained.
Authorities say the drugs were going to Bogota.
This follows another seizure made earlier this week when police found a shipment of 1.6 tonnes of marijuana east of the capital.
These latest hauls bring the total amount of marijuana seized this year to 80 tonnes.
Last year, the total haul was 30 tonnes. |
