India’s lower house of parliament has passed a much awaited anti-rape law. It comes after a huge public outcry over the treatment of women in the country, triggered by the rape and murder of a student in New Delhi. 印度下议院已经通过了一部被期盼已久的反强奸法律。该法律是在去年新德里发生的一起女学生被强奸并谋杀而引起了强烈公众抗议后出台的。
The "Criminal Laws Bill" includes stringent punishments for rape and other sexual crimes. Rapists will be given up to 20 years in prison, with the possibility of death sentences in extreme cases.

Other crimes will also have statutory punishments including acid attacks, human trafficking, stalking and voyeurism. The bill also increases the age of sexual consent for girls from 16 to 18 years.

The gang rape and murder in December of a 23-year-old medical student prompted huge nation-wide protests. It led the government to commission a special judicial panel, to examine possible changes to India’s criminal laws.

India has one of the world’s worst records of violence against women. The bill will now be tabled in the country’s upper house on March 21st.
