China Calls for Political Solution on Syria(在线收听

The Chinese Foreign Ministry is calling for G8 countries to overcome their difference on Syria and aiming for a political solution to resolve that crisis.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying has made the comments after US President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged their disagreements on arming the Syrian rebels at the G8 meeting in Northern Ireland.

"Relevant parties need to focus on safeguarding peace and stability inside Syria and the Middle East region and continue to aim for a political solution."

At a press conference after Obama and Putin's 2-hour talks, the two leaders admitted they had big differences on Syria, but they agreed to push for a summit in Geneva, Switzerland.

The United States has previously announced it would begin arming Syria's opposition forces because it now has proof that chemical weapons were used against the rebels.

But Russia has dismissed those claims, saying they're based on unreliable evidence.
