WASHINGTON, Sept. 3 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Russel will visit the Republic of Korea (ROK), Japan, Brunei, Indonesia and China on Sept. 5-14 in his first Asian tour since taking office, the State Department said Tuesday.

This five-nation tour by Russel, who succeeded Kurt Campbell in July as the top U.S. envoy on Asian and Pacific affairs, will "advance our close coordination with our allies and engagement with our East Asia partners," the State Department said in a statement.
Russel is to arrive in Seoul on Sept. 5, where he will meet with senior ROK officials "to consult and coordinate on the wide range of issues of importance to our alliance, including North Korea, regional cooperation, and global issues," the statement said.
During his Sept. 7-9 stay in Japan, Russel will meet with senior Japanese officials to discuss a broad range of bilateral, regional, and global issues.
Then he will travel to Brunei on Sept. 10 to attend meetings with his counterparts in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and East Asia Summit to coordinate preparations for the U.S.-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit in October.
On Sept. 12, Russel will visit Jakarta for discussions with senior Indonesian government officials of a range of bilateral and regional matters.
In the last leg of the tour, Russel will arrive in Beijing on Sept. 13 to meet with senior Chinese officials to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual concern, the State Department added.
