Federal politicians due return to Canberra today as the Treasurer Wayne Swan prepares to hand down his sixth budget. He has considered it's going to be very uncomfortable to go back on his promise of a budget surplus. Instead, a 17-billion-dollar revenue shortfall will mean delays to some promised tax cuts and benefits. At least 12 people, including a child, have reportedly been shot during a Mother's Day parade in New Orleans.The shots were fired as hundreds of people gathered for the annual parade .Now the details are still unclear, but there are no reports so far of fatalities. At least three people are at the moment undergoing surgery. It's believed police are looking for three people in connection with the attack.
The stewards inquiry into horse racing's more joyous affair resumes in Sydney this morning. Footballer Andrew Johns and former jockey Allan Robinson are both due to appear. They'll give evidence in the row between the mare's owner John Singleton and now former trainer Gal Waterhouse.
A search has continued through the night for a Melbourne diver who failed to surface during a fishing trip. The 52-year-old man went spear fishing on a reef about a hundred metres off Brighton yesterday.
And Melbourne police have charged a man over a fatal hit-and-run incident. The victim was struck by a car in Lygon Street, Brunswick yesterday afternoon. A 40-year-old man later turned up at the police station. |
