Sixty-five Australians are among nearly 350 people arrested after Canadian police smashed a huge international child pornography ring based in Toronto. Nearly 400 children around the world have been rescued and an online tip-off from a website in Canada played a critical role in uncovering this ring. The army has sacked six members involved in a sex scandal. They are part of a group known as the knights of the Jedi Council who emailed demeaning sexual videos of women.
Queensland health authorities are warning there could be more cases of salmonella poisoning linked to a fatal outbreak in Brisbane. A 77-year-old woman has died and more than 200 other people have fallen ill. The outbreak is linked to a catering company that provided food to up to 40 Melbourne cup functions in Brisbane last week.
The New South Wales Director of Public Prosecutions will appeal against the sentence given to the man who killed a Sydney teenager Thomas Kelly. Kieran Loveridge was jailed last week for a minimum of four years. Thomas Kelly died after he was king-hit by Loveridge during a night out in Kings Cross last year.
And Federal Parliament has less than a fortnight to resolve that standoff over the debt ceiling. Treasurer Joe Hockey has warned of massive spending cuts if the dispute is not resolved. The government wants to lift the debt ceiling to 500 billion dollars. But Labor and the Greens want it kept at 400 billion dollars. |
