The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, or Snow Dragon, was just 6.1 nautical miles away from the trapped ship, but now it’s stuck itself in an Antarctica ice floe. The Chinese crew is counting on a ship from Australia, the Aurora Australis, to arrive on Sunday to break it out.

The icebreaker was battling the planet’s coldest environment in trying to reach the stranded Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy. The over 50 researchers, crew and tourists on board remained in good condition despite being at a frozen standstill since Monday.

Xue Long is in close communication with the stalled Russian ship, and will send helicopters to rescue people on-board if conditions endanger the Russian crew's safety.
