伦比亚北部缉获两吨可卡因 BOGOTA, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Colombia's anti-narcotic police on Saturday seized two tons of cocaine that allegedly belonged to the criminal gang Los Urabenos at the port of Santa Marta on the country's northern Caribbean coast.
"The shipment was seized in the inspection area of the Port Authority of Santa Marta, after intelligence activities pointed out that a load of bananas may be contaminated," a police report said.
According to the authorities, the two tons of cocaine, valued at 56 million U.S. dollars, were about to be shipped to the United States via Central America.
Police director (Rodolfo Palomino) "acknowledged that the drug was the engine for the criminal group Los Urabenos," which is one of Colombia's most feared drug trafficking organizations, the report added.
Los Urabenos, which takes its name from the Uraba region of northwestern Colombia, handled from a third to half of the 300 tons of cocaine shipped to the United States last year, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.
The Colombian police have seized more than 25 tons of cocaine so far this year. |
