AGun possession in China is strictly regulated, even among law enforcement authorities. But now, over 1,000 police officers in Shanghai are being allowed to carry revolvers on regular patrols. The Ministry of Public Security says the move is in response to the fatal knife attacks in Kunming and Changsha last month.

carry revolvers on regular patrols.
A new chapter in Shanghai policing. Over 1,000 officers will now walk their beat carrying a gun, as the country deals with recent violent crimes.
"Police can fire their weapons when a criminal threatens public security with another weapon or explosive device." Rui Minghua, director of Police Patrol Div., Shanghai Municipal PSB, said.
Previously, during their patrols, Shanghai police would carry a baton, flashlight, first aid kit, walkie-talkie, handcuffs, and tear gas cannisters. Now those with side-arms will carry out their patrols in pairs around populated areas.
"I do feel more responsible now. With a gun, we can respond to violent crimes more effectively and quickly. And our supervision will become more strict, to make sure we carry and use the weapon safely." Chen Jian, police officer of Changning Branch, Shanghai Municipal PSB, said.
Fatal knife attacks in Kunming and Changsha in March left 39 people dead and 143 others injured, and left many across the country feeling more wary about defending their personal safety.
"It is common for police to carry guns in other countries. I think it will help them protect the public in emergency situations." A Shanghai resident said.
"Since violent attacks happen in the country, it’s better to take proactive measures rather than responding afterwards." A Shanghai resident said.
All of the armed officers underwent special psychological evaluations and firearm training before being issued a revolver.
In addition to Shanghai, policemen in other key cities will also be reinforced to effectively prevent and crack down on criminal activities.
