The search and rescue operation for missing South Korean passengers continued for the ninth day on Thursday. Families of passengers whose relative’s bodies have been retrieved have started to leave the southern island of Jindo. 

Parents of the missing students monitor the rescue operations from a far. They want results. They want answers. Thursday was the last day of low tides. 16 more bodies were retrieved as of Thursday afternoon, which meant an equal number of families could go home soon.

This gymnasium in Jindo, once packed with families of the missing passengers, is now only half full on Thursday, after more bodies were retrieved earlier this week.

The one’s left, their faces shadowed with grief and worry, pray they will soon return home with their loved ones.

The whole country is praying with them too. South Koreans have started a wave of yellow ribbons, both offline and online. In Ansan, outside Danwon High-school, people gather to mourn for the dead, and to tie yellow ribbons to show they support the families.

"I’m a parent. It really breaks my heart. I’m really sorry that I could not protect them as adults. I pray for their peace."

Back in Jindo, the yellow ribbons with messages of hope written on them, flutter at Paengmok port, where the families await for those missing to return.
