Taiwan said it would stop the construction of the island's fourth nuclear power plant which has triggered safety concerns. The local authorities made the decision after tens of thousands of protesters blocked a main street in Taipei calling for the project to be scrapped.
Protesters number at over twenty-eight thousand according to the police and the traffic authority estimates that 77 bus lines and about 450,000 passengers had been affected by the traffic gridlock. According to Kuomintang spokesman Fan Chiang Tai-chi, Construction of the plant’s Number one and Number two reactors will be halted.
Taiwan’s three existing nuclear power plants supply about twenty percent of the island's electricity and the fourth plant is almost complete. |
