September 18—Dr. Johnson’s Birthday

The son of a Lichfield bookseller, Samuel Johnson¹ lived to become one of the English language’s most profound influences. His 1755 dictionary was the most thorough lexicon² of its time, remarkable for its previously unheard-of use of famous literary quotes to illustrate words’ meanings. But Johnson, apart from “Dictionary Johnson,” wore other hats, too. No mere egghead³, he was at various points in his life a travels writer, a hack writer⁴, an Oxford dropout⁵, and a hypochondriac⁶. He also experienced poverty and was married to a woman twenty years his senior.

He was born September 18, 1709. Every year on that day or the Saturday nearest, members of the Johnson Society gather in the author’ s hometown where at noon the Lichfield mayor ceremoniously lays a wreath at the foot of Johnson’ s statue. Meanwhile, the cathedral choir sings hymns and the Johnson Anthem. After a visit to the house where the author was born, the group sits down to its annual Johnson Supper in the Lichfield Guildhall⁷. On the following Monday, the nearby town of Uttoxeter performs its own Johnson memorial. A wreath is laid on the spot where, Johnson did public penance⁸ for having hurt his father’s feelings -- all of fifty years previous -- when he fled the county rather than be a clerk at the old man’ s bookstall.
