Come evening, a cool mist hangs over the lake, as the last of the egg-laying caddis flies get picked off by ducks and bears.

 

Brown bears are crepuscular, preferring to venture out at dawn or dusk. They have a fantastic sense of smell, and can track the scent of the carcass for over three kilometers. But they are not alone in that respect. Two predators are after the same prize, but there is no way a fifty-kilogram wolf will challenge a 500-kilogram bear. Getting in first, the weaker wolf steals what it can, a large leg bone, but stopping to watch its back is a mistake.
