The Making of Catwoman
CAT-TALE
Halle Berry: Patience Phillips is a woman who is very intelligent, very talented. She just doesn’t really know that yet. Denise Di Novi: She does 1)graphics and advertising for a cosmetics company. Sharon Stone: Laurel Hedare is the wife of a man, who owns this cosmetic company called Hedare Cosmetics, and they make this product called “Beauty” which is just a cream that makes you never ever age. Lambert Wilson: He’s very tough, pretty ruthless. I don’t think he has many 2)redeeming factors about him. She (Patience) will have to bring the new designs directly to the factory, where they’re going to go straight into printing. This is how she overhears... (scenes from “Catwoman”) George Hedare: I can 3)live with it being 4)addictive, but these side effects from the long-term studies...I can’t live with turning people into monsters. Halle Berry: She’s ultimately killed, and the breath of life has been breathed into her by this beautiful mild cat, and she’s reborn, 5)anew, as Catwoman. (scenes from “Catwoman”) Ophelia: You are a catwoman. Fierce independence, total confidence, inhuman reflexes. Halle Berry: She now has powers no one dreams exist. She’s got the powers of a big cat. She has special cat vision, she’s a 6)stealthy fighter, she looks very much like who she used to be, but inside, her mentality and her thought process is totally different. By the end of the movie, we hope we’ll present a character that has sort of learned how to control the 7)duality of this new personality, which in turn, makes for a 8)well-rounded woman, which we all, I think 9)strive to be.
CAT-SUIT
Denise Di Novi: One of the most fun things about doing this movie, and the most exciting, is that we wanted to create a new Catwoman costume. Halle Berry: Every Catwoman costume, over the years, has been different. There’s been no two women who’ve worn the same costume. Edward McDonnell: We wanted to distinguish ourselves enough from previous 10)incarnations of Catwoman that we felt like we were unique. Angus Strathie: We wanted a sense of 11)contemporary, urban texture to her, and she’s all leather. We were reluctant to give her a head to toe body suit, so it was all about showing as much skin as possible, as well as giving her enough protection to be the warrior. Halle Berry: Being able to see the back of the costume and see the 12)spine, sort of how the ribs are, sort of the muscles and the 13)sinewiness is really what she’s all about. Instead of having her all covered up this time, you actually get to see some of that. Denise Di Novi: Cats need their paws, so we had open toes. That’s great for jumping and fighting.
CAT-WRANGLING
Denise Di Novi: Cats are not easy to train. Our trainers were fantastic, luckily for us, because we had a lot of very complex things that these cats had to do. Boone Narr: When we first got involved in this movie, everyone approached us says, “Oh, cats can’t be trained. You can’t do this. We’re going to CGI this cat.” Well, the director and the producers came out to our ranch and we showed them some trained cats and went, “Maybe you could do a small portion of the film, and then we can 14)intermix it with 15)CGI cats.” Ninety-nine percent of this movie is real cat.
CAT-FIGHTING
Sharon Stone: Catwoman and I start “16)whooping” each other’s tails. I do kind of the basic, just pounding the crap out of her. Pitof: Catwoman is not the Japanese fighter or Kung fu fighter, so I wanted to bring something different for her. Denise Di Novi: A lot of the stuff that Halle does in the movie is based on actual cat movements. Halle Berry: I worked with Anne Fletcher—she’s our 17)choreographer—and now I call her “cat specialist.” That should be on her resume. Anne Fletcher: ...18)picked up on Catwoman’s movement to be exactly like a cat. He didn’t want to stretch from the reality of that. He (director) wanted to see how far the human body could act like a cat. Halle Berry: I watched hours and hours of video tape. Denise Di Novi: And we would see these cats leaping from eight stories or doing figure eights in mid-air, and say, “How do they do it?” You know, it’s 19)supernatural. Recreating that with the female human body was fantastic. Halle Berry: I studied “20)Capoeira”—it’s a Brazilian form of martial arts. Pitof: It comes from the observations of animals. It’s very feline. It’s very low to the ground. They use the hand, the foot. To me it was really the start point to figure what could be the Catwoman type of fight.
CAT-WORD
Lambert Wilson: It’s a great combination of action, a great love story, a superb woman. Denise Di Novi: The myth of transformation, self-21)empowerment, finding out who you really are—your voice and your power—Catwoman really represents that. Halle Berry: She’s feeling her power and understanding and discovering what it’s like to be a powerful woman in the world, and what that means.
