 　　Well, President Obama recently gave a major foreign policy speech at the West Point Military Academy in which he outlined his plan to forge counterterrorism partnerships with US allies in different regions of the world. The White House is now seeking congressional support for $5 billion in counterterrorism partnership funding, $500 million of which would go to train and equip the Syrian opposition vetted members of the force that is fighting the army of President Bashar al-Assad. Now if Congress approves the funding, it would mark the first direct US military participation in the Syrian conflict, but it's a big if, Fred. Lawmakers have previously expressed misgivings about how to identify moderates amongst the Syrian opposition, and of course the possibility of American weapons falling into the hands of extremists. It is possible though that the Senate could vote on this bill before the recess in August.
