CCTV9英语新闻:孟加拉人冒着生命危险逃离贫困(在线收听) |
Authorities and aid workers have found traffickers' boats carrying as many Bangladeshis as Rohingya, the persecuted Muslim minority fleeing Myanmar.
Since early May, more than 3,600 people have landed in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Half are from Bangladesh and half are Rohingyas from Myanmar. Thousands more are thought to be trapped at sea in boats abandoned by their captains.
Bangladesh is no longer the economic sink-hole it was in the past. Its economy has been growing at more than six percent, but poverty remains. The per capita income in Bangladesh is still about 1,000 US dollars a year. It's a situation that leaves many people susceptible to the sales pitches of fast-talking traffickers. |
