CCTV9英语新闻:暴雨持续袭击南方多省(在线收听) |
Much of the southern half of the country continues to battle heavy rains which have been nearly relentless for weeks. According to meteorological authorities.
In China's Jiangxi and Guangxi areas the rainfall has already passed average precipitation amounts for the spring rainy season which typically begin in April or May and last until September or October.
Weather authorities predict rainfall will continue in the provinces of Yunnan, Guizhou, Hunan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, and Fujian, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region on Tuesday before slowly moving to the north and northeast.
Downpours continue to wreak havoc in southern China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. In one of the region's hardest-hit counties, the rainfall triggered severe floods. Many roads and houses now lie underwater. Some schools were left scrambling to deal with the heavy rains.
"The electricity was cut off, the dormitories were flooded. That's our biggest concern, the safety issues caused by water in the rooms. And there are also worries about a possible epidemic in the school," said Nong Jianwei, principal of Dahua Foreugn Language Experimental School.
The school was forced to use candles and flashlights to light the classes and allow students to study. To reach the campus, teachers have to use a rubber dinghy to bring food.
The nightmare has unfolded in both urban and rural areas, with farmland submerged by water and cities struggling with transportation headaches.
In Jiangxi province, flooding heavily delayed the traffic in the cities of Shang Rao and Yi Chun, and hundreds of bus routes have been suspended. Residents are frustrated.
"I have been waiting for over 20 minutes. These cars ahead of me must have been waiting for a much longer time than me," said a local resident.
Rain is expected to last for the next few days here. The meteorological department says that this year's rainy season has already seen precipitation levels above the historical average. Officials are warning people to be cautious as the rains continue. |
