On July 23, Amy Winehouse was found dead in her apartment and soon her record label, Universal Republic, released a statement that read in part“We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer “Many musical artists have since paid tribute to Winehouse including U2, Lady Gaga etc.
Her death shocked a lot just like her huge success in music. The singer won 2008 Grammy Awards in the categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance besides Best Pop Vocal Album award and Grammy Award for Producer of the Year which earned her the entry in the 2009 edition of the the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Grammy Awards won by a British female singer.
Her reason of death is much in relation to drug abuse and alcohol. She even missed the 2008 Grammy Awards Ceremony because of her health problem and passport. Besides she suffered form self –harm, depression and eating disorders. Her exaggerated image also made her rather different.
She grew up in the Jazz environment for many of her relatives are Jazz professionals . She listened master pieces under her parents’ guidance and was deeply attracted by R&B and Hip-Hop during teenage time because the spirit of rebelling. Then she was expelled from school with the headmaster‘s comments “She is the one who dares to break all the rules.”
Leaving school turned out a good chance for her. She sent one demo to Island through her close friend and then got a contract. Her first album Frank was release when she was 19 and got success with her Jazz and Soul vocal. The next album Back to Black is so great that finally brought her Grammy wonder.
Amy is a controversial figure. She paved the way for unconventional women to have mainstream POP success. But her terrible image and bad habits like drug addicting annoyed many more. Even her father predicated her death and prepared the obituary beforehand. Now, she took all these away and leaving the world the big question as talent or convention?
