CCTV9英语新闻:UEFA Champions League: Citizens win 3-1 on agg. to reach quarters for first time(在线收听

In UEFA Champions League, Manchester City hosted Dynamo Kiev for the second leg of their last 16 tie on Tuesday. City came into this match at the Etihad Stadium with a 3-1 advantage that all but assured them of passage to the quarter-finals for the first time in this club's history.

However, the Premier League side are not helped with Vincent Kompany limping off after five minutes. The City captain is likely to be sidelined for about a month with an old calf problem.

Their injury woes are compounded as Nicolas Otamendi is also substituted with barely 20 minutes on the clock.

Manuel Pellegrini's team, after losing both centre backs, manage to keep a clean sheet with an in-form Joe Hart. The English international remains solid in the goal. The two sides would finish the first half 0-0 with City leading 3-1 on aggregate.

The second half develops in the way the hosts expected. They take firm control and almost grab the lead around the hour mark, but Jesus Navas' effort is denied by the post and it stays scoreless. Kiev shows no signs of fighting back  as Navas shoots from a narrow angle but fails to beat the woodwork.

City keep pressing forward, hoping to finish the tie with a win at home. The team's top scorer Sergio Aguero shows his class with a perfect spin to break away from two Kiev players, but his through pass is too long for David Silva. The Argentine striker dispappointed more didn't come from the play.

Dynamo have their best chance in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Olexandr Yakovenko in front, but Hart delivers a great save to keep the score at 0-0. The match would remain goal-less to the final whistle. City, win 3-1 on aggregate and Pellegrini's men advance to the quarter-finals of the champions league for the first time in club history.

"First of all I am very happy for the achievement because it's important for this club to continue improving every season," said Manuel Pellegrini, Manchester City Manager.

"I always said that the last two seasons we were very unlucky to have the draws in the round of 16, I think it was an achievement to get to the round of 16, because before we couldn't do it, but we were unlucky to play against Barcelona. This season we won the group and we now are in the best eight teams of Europe for the moment. We'll see how we've arrived at this competition."

Simeone's men make last eight for third straight year

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid would entertain PSV Eindhoven at home after a goal-less draw in the first leg. Antoine Griezmann remains a constant threat on the front-line.

But the Frenchman's efforts are all denied by PSV keeper Jeroen Zoet. The first half finishes 0-0.

In the 58th, Eindhoven almost open the scoring, but Jurgen Locadia's shot is pushed onto the post. Atletico would need to score at least two goals if Locadia had been successful.

Diego Simeone then puts on Fernando Torres.

But both teams fail to score in regulation, and the extra session would solve nothing so it goes to a penalty shootout.

And there Luciano Narsingh hits the crossbar to doom Eindhoven.

Juanfran converts the winning spotkick. Atletico win 8-7 on penalties and march onto the last eight of the competition for a third straight year.
