CCTV9英语新闻:Traffic delays the major cause for organ waste(在线收听

Organ donation cases have been rising in China, with the donor-to-demand ratio increasing by 70 times compared to 5 years ago. But still, huge waste is caused due to traffic delays.

In the first 9 months of 2015, about 300 lungs were donated across China, of which half were transplanted. Around 60 percent of the rest were discarded because they deteriorated during delays in transport. That is according to WuxiPeople's hospital which conducts almost all of China's lung transplant surgeries.

Due to a lack of a dedicated system, commercial transportation is the only reliance. However, bottlenecks on the ground are common, and civilian flight delays are among the worst in the world, with 80 percent of China’s airspace restricted, making organ transportation difficult.

In addition to the nearly two thousand deceased donors who contributed about 5,000 organs to the common pool last year, an additional 2,000 to 2,500 organs were provided by living donors to relatives, while there has been 24,000 patients in the waiting list, according to Red Cross Society.
