Australia's most senior, Catholic Cardinal George Pell is less than an hour away now from giving his much chance anticipated video link evidence to the royal commission into child sexual abuse. There was a scuffle between media and security outside the Rome Hotel when the Cardinal arrived a short time ago to give that evidence. Victims of Clerical abuse have also arrived at the hotel to hear Cardinal Pell's testimony.

An investigation by 4 corners has found evidence of problems at BHP Billiton's joint venture mine in Brazil. A decade before the mine's dam collapsed killing 19 people. Samarco, a company owned by BHP Billiton and Brazilian mining giant Vale was operating the mine when its dam unleashed a torrent of sludge last November. A Brazilian prosecutor describes Samarco as exhibiting repeated continual negligence. Police are also seeking the arrest of 6 Samarco executives on charges of qualified homicide.

A baby boy has been released from a Hobart hospital in good health following his emergency birth after his pregnant mother was killed in a car crash. In January, Sara Paino died at the scene of a car crash but her son Caleb was born via an emergency caesarean shortly afterwards.

And the creators of the Blockbuster 'Mad Max: Fury Road' are among Australia's best chances at the Oscars today with George Miller nominated for best director. Cate Blanchett is also up for best actress for her role in the film Carol. The ceremony gets underway at about midday Australian time.
