American scientists announced that they had cloned the Zika virus. This is an important stage in producing a safe version of the pathogen to be used in a vaccine against the mosquito-borne illness, which has been linked to brain deformities. The virus, cloned at the University of Texas, proved able to infect mosquitoes and make mice ill.
