Iraqi Film Festival Focused on the Environment

Each year, Sulaymaniyah City hosts a week-long film festival screening movies from across the globe.During the festival, musicians from different areas come to perform as well. The fourth year of its existence, this year’s theme is about the environment. They should be about important topics. Last year we chose “brave women”, this year it is about climate change and we named it “earth cancer”. The 154 films that entered in the festival come from 78 different countries and in different categories. A panel of judges decides who the winners are and awards are given on the final day of the festival.There are several categories for the short films. There are talent films for the young directors, national and international films. There are also documentaries which includes national and international. There are also long movies. Each room for these has its own judges. On the final day, there are red carpet activities. National musicians and singers will be there performing songs and music. Lastly the winners of the festival will be announced and awarded. Local people expressed appreciation for the festival. I attended all rounds of Slemani International Film Festival and each year it gets better. I’m sure it will be improving a lot in the future. Each year there are better staff and programs. That’s why I like it a lot. I think it pushes people toward creativity. It helps them to have new perspectives. The city of Sulaymaniyah is often referred to a safe city in a conflict zone, therefore organizers are constantly worried about being shut down. We need these festivals to exist. 20 years ago, there was the first film festival in Sulaymaniyah. There have been several festivals. Each one of them were forced to stop after a few rounds. Still there are threats to stop this festival. We need these festivals. Filmmaking is very important.And as the fourth annual Slemani International Film Festival wraps up, artists across the globe get ready for new submissions next year. After all, the show must go on.
