The federal opposition has reacted angrily to a series of federal police raids on Alp offices and staffer's home in Melbourne.

The AFP searched the office of Labor frontbencher Stephen Conroy and a house in Brunswick as part of an investigation into leaked documents about the national broadband network.

The AFP says the investigation is independent from government, and both Labor and the coalition were notified of the raids after they commenced.
