The government is looking at a possible assistance package for dairy farmers, with the industry reeling from retrospective cuts to milk prices.

Murray Goulburn and Fonterra have slashed their prices paid to farmers, and lion dairy and drinks has also cut prices to some Tasmanian suppliers.

The dairy farmers association says producers have been left with debts in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The BBC has announced it's closing a number of websites, including BBC food, BBC travel and newsbeat, as part of plans to save nearly 30 million Australian dollars.

Separately, plans are being considered to merge the news channel with the BBC's international 24-hour TV news service.

The planned end of the BBC food site prompted an online petition which has attracted more than 90,000 supporters.
