After years of feeling lost, she found herself through healthy eating—and launched a movement

In the calm, cozy living room of her Salt Lake City home, Melissa Hartwig Urban is sitting pretty.

Ten years after she cofounded Whole 30—a diet plan that's gained an obsessive following—she has a new book (her eighth), a weekly podcast and loves her life with a 6-year-old son and her boyfriend of three years, Brandon Talbot.

"I never could have predicted things would turn out this way," she says. That's because Hartwig Urban, 45, now a certified sports nutritionist, was not always the picture of health.

For five years she was addicted to heroin. "I felt worthless, but now I feel like my addiction was setting me up for this path."

The similarities between food and drugs—how people use them "to comfort, reward, self-soothe, punish," she says—helped form her business.

Growing up in Nashua, N.H., with a stay-at-home mom and a father who worked two jobs, Hartwig Urban "had everything going for me in terms of financial support, family stability and good grades. It was all very vanilla."

But in the early '90s, she says, she was sexually assaulted by a relative and was disappointed by her family's response. "I don't think they knew how to process it," she says.

Feeling "abandoned and unheard," she decided to try marijuana at 18, just before becoming a premed student at the University of New Hampshire.

"I was like, 'This is what I've been missing.' " Before long Hartwig Urban was regularly using ecstasy, heroin, psychedelics and pills—and she began cutting, which gave her "a sense of relief and then crippling depression."

She dropped out of college, got a job as an administrative assistant for an insurance company and soon realized her life was spiraling out of control.

"I was either going to go to jail or die," says Hartwig Urban. After two stints in rehab, "I felt very lost, but I knew that I had so much in my life that I had to rebuild."

Time, therapy and a fortuitous day at the gymchanged everything. In 2009, after a grueling CrossFit session, her exhusband Dallas Hartwig "proposed cleaning up our diet.

I said, 'Yeah, when do you want to start?' He said, 'How about right now?' " The couple—who divorced in 2015—designed a 30-day elimination diet and the Whole 30 was born.

"My sleep improved, my mood was better and I had more energy," says Hartwig Urban.

After a month of giving up sugar, dairy and grains, "you reintroduce those foods one day at a time, very carefully, to find out what doesn't agree with you."

While critics claim that the method is too restrictive or not sustainable, Hartwig Urban says it's "not meant to continue forever. You have to figure out what works for you."

With the kind of unpredictable schedule that comes with success, Hartwig Urban is grateful to have one constant in her life—her son: "He changed everything. I became more patient, and that spilled into every area of my life."

She's grateful for her relationship with Talbot too. "I never had someone who I felt like I could lean on for the good stuff and the hard stuff," she says of her boyfriend.

"It's incredible to feel like someone's proud of what I'm doing." Urban gives herself credit as well: "I'm super proud. I've come into my own."
