The kids at Hickerson elementary simply call him Mr. James, the custodian who's been a beloved fixture here for two decades. For his 60th, because James Anthony is deaf, the kids knew they hadto do more than just singing Happy Birthday. So they learned how to sign it. As Mr. James came in here, we did it altogether. I feel really good for I did that. Because he is so happy. His reaction. I was very shocked. I was coming in thinking I had another mess to clean up. We were all in tears because it was just amazing when they were so excited. Born with polio, James lost his hearing as a teen, but he's found something else. It's been a moving experience seeing that class. Wow. It just shows me that I am pretty important here. A birthday wish worth a thousand words in any language. |
