Large swathes of Melbourne are this morning no-go zones, after the nation's top health officials warned people should avoid travel to and from six council areas across the city. They are all considered new hotstops for coronavirus, following a steady rise in cases since some restrictions were eased. Nearly 20% of Victoria's population lives in the affected areas, which include Melbourne's densely populated north, north-west and south-east. In response, the state government's tightened its COVID-19 control measures, with tougher restrictions on gatherings coming back into force this morning.

British police are tr???eating a deadly knife attack in a park in Reading, west of London as a terrorist incident. Three people have been killed with another three seriously injured. The man suspected of carrying out the attack – 25-year-old Khairi Saadallah has been arrested. British media are reporting the man was known to the domestic security service, MI5.
