Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained by the military.

A ruling party spokesperson said President U Win Myint and other senior officials of the National League for Democracy were also detained early on Monday.

Associate Research Fellow Du Lan with China Institute of International Studies says the situation is still developing.

"I think the military and the government's relationship is very critical for Myanmar's development and stability. For now, we don't know what will be the reaction from the government and what will be the next step from the military."

Myanmar's military declared a state of emergency in the country for one year following the detention of the government leaders.

Respiratory-disease expert Zhong Nanshan says the mass inoculation underway in China shows that the country's COVID vaccines are safe and effective.

"China's two vaccines are both inactivated whole virus vaccines. The advantage is that they are highly secure. Regarding their effectiveness, generally, after the first dose, the level of antibodies will reach about 60 to 70 percent. Fourteen days after the second dose is taken, the level of antibodies can get close to 90 percent."

In terms of the efficacy of the Chinese vaccines, Zhong says they can protect people against COVID-19 for at least six months.

Official data shows that more than 24 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered in China so far.

Zhong says it takes at least two to three weeks for the vaccines to produce antibodies before there is a significant protective effect.

He says that the development trend of the global COVID-19 pandemic will not become clear until about March.

The Chinese mainland recorded 42 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday.

Health officials say the total includes 33 local transmissions and nine from overseas.

Of the locally transmitted cases, 22 were reported in Heilongjiang Province, ten in Jilin Province and one in Hebei Province.

Canada's COVID-19 deaths have surpassed 20 thousand.

The country has so far reported over 778 thousand infections.

So far, Canada has administered over 952 thousand COVID-19 vaccine doses while more than 22 million tests have also been administered across the country.

The European Union says AstraZeneca will deliver nine million extra doses of its COVID-19 vaccine to the EU in the first quarter of this year.

European Commission President Ursula von de Leyen says company will deliver a total of 40 million doses one week earlier than scheduled.

AstraZeneca announced earlier this month plans to cut supplies of its vaccine to the EU in the first quarter, sparking a row over supplies.

The Anglo-Swedish company had originally committed to deliver at least 80 million shots in the first quarter.

British centenarian Captain Tom Moore, who raised millions of pounds for the health service during lockdown, has been hospitalized with COVID-19.

His daughter Hanna Ingram-Moore announced on Twitter that her father tested positive for COVID-19 last week and remained home until he needed additional help with is breathing.

She says he's not in the intensive care unit, but is being treated in a ward.

The Nobel Prize banquet venue at Stockholm's City Hall has become a COVID-19 vaccination center.

Vaccinations were administered for the first time inside the "Blue Hall"on Sunday.
