5 nuclear-weapon states vow no arms race in joint statement

China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States have pledged to prevent nuclear war and avoid arms races.

The leaders of the five nuclear-weapon states made the joint statement, reaffirming their commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty obligation.

The statement says none of their nuclear weapons are targeted at each other or at any other state and a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu says it is the first time for the leaders of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council to issue a statement on nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, Director General Fu Cong with the arms control department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry calls it pertinent and timely.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed the nuclear-weapon states' joint statement on the prevention of nuclear war and avoidance of arms races.

A UN spokesperson says Guterres is willing to work with the nuclear-weapon states and all UN member states to achieve this goal.
