Hong Kong chief executive election postponed

It's been announced this year's election of Hong Kong's new leader will be postponed to May 8 due to the current COVID-19 situation.

Meanwhile, the nomination period will be put off to April.

The date for the election was originally scheduled for March 27.

Chief Executive Carrie Lam explained that the decision came after a special meeting with the Executive Council, which approved the delay, citing the Emergency Regulations Ordinance.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has just wrapped up a visit to Japan to assess the safety of a planned release of water from the Fukushima nuclear power station.

The organization says it now has a better understanding of the Japanese government's plans to release more than 1 million tonnes of treated water.

Judge rules Trump must testify in New York probe

A U.S. judge has ordered former President Donald Trump and his children to testify in New York State's civil investigation into their family company.

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump and his two eldest children, Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. must comply with subpoenas and answer questions under oath.

Judge Engoron said Trump and his two children must sit for a deposition within 21 days.

New York Attorney General Letitia James issued the subpoenas in December.

Last month, she announced that her almost three-year investigation into Trump's company had uncovered evidence of possible fraudulent conduct.

Reacting to the ruling, Trump issued a statement calling the accusations against his company false and accused James of a political agenda in targeting him and his family.

Chinese yuan ranks 4th popular in cross-border payments

The Chinese yuan remained as the fourth most popular currency for global payments in January.

The currency took a share of 3.2 percent, ranking behind the U.S. dollar, the euro and the pound.

The value of yuan payments increased by nearly 11 percent compared to December when it overtook Japan's yen as the fourth most active currency in the world.
