Erasmus stared at the old scrolls with dismay.

伊拉玛盯着箱中陈旧的羊皮卷，

"As wealthy even, as you?"

困惑不解地问道：“和您一样有钱？”

"Far wealthier, if he chooses"

“如果愿意，甚至可以比我还富有。”

"You have stated that all but one of these scrolls contain selling principles.

“您刚才说过，这些羊皮卷讲的都是推销的办法，除了一卷以外，

What is contained on the last scroll?"

那这一卷又讲了些什么呢？”

"The last scroll, as you call it,

“你说的这一卷，

is the first scroll which must be read,

其实是必须阅读的第一卷。

since each is numbered to be read in a special sequence.

其它每卷都要按特殊的顺序来读。

And the first scroll contains a secret

这头一卷里藏着一个秘密，

which has been given to a mere handful of wise men

能够领悟它的智者，

throughout history.

历史上寥寥无几。

The first scroll, in truth,

事实上，这第一卷是阅读指南，

teaches the most effective way to learn what is written on the others."

告诉我们怎样有效地看完其它几卷。”

"It seems to be a task that anyone can master"

“听起来象是人人都可以做的事情。”

"It is, indeed, a simple task

provided one is willing to pay the price

in time and concentration

专心致志，

until each principle becomes a part of one's personality;

until each principle becomes a habit in living."

Erasmus reached into the chest and removed a scroll

伊拉玛伸手拿出了一卷，

Holding it gently between his fingers and his thumb,

小心翼翼地捧着它，

he shook it toward Hafid.

颤巍巍地问它的主人：

"Forgive me, master,

“请您原谅我这么问，

but why is it that you have not shared these principles with others,

为什么您不把这些原则告诉大家？

especially those who have labored long in your employ?

with such valuable knowledge.

Why have you kept these principles to yourself for all these years?"

I had no choice.

“我没有选择的余地。

Many years ago when these scrolls were entrusted to my care,

I was made to promise under oath,

that I would share their contents with only one person.

I do not yet understand the reasoning behind this strange request.
