2. Hundreds of civilians are reportedly dead after violence broke out in Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia. Russia's tanks are reportedly bombed air bases after Georgia launched a major military offensive to retake the province. There's growing concern the fighting could lead to all-out war.

3. A charter bus carrying a Vietnamese Catholic group to an annual pilgrimage slammed onto its side and then skidded off a Sherman, Texas freeway. At least 13 people were killed and more than 40 others were hurt.

4. And fireworks lit up the night sky over Beijing. Thousands flooded iconic Tiananmen Square to watch the fireworks show after the opening ceremonies to mark the Olympics Summer Games.
