[00:10.66]One is that success itself will never befall on you [00:15.47]unless you pay enough. [00:17.33]The other is that the won success not only shines [00:22.14]but also dazzles. [00:24.65]Become What You Want to Be! 成就梦想 [00:33.31]Wilma was born into a very poor family in Tennessee. [00:39.00]She was born earlier than she should have been and was very weak. [00:44.03]When she was four years old she had pneumonia [00:47.96]and scarlet fever that left her with a useless left leg. [00:52.44]She had to wear an iron leg brace. [00:55.17]Yet she was fortunate because her mother encouraged her. [00:59.54]Wilma’s mother told her that she could do anything [01:03.82]she wanted to do in spite of the brace and leg. [01:07.31]She told Wilma that all she needed to do was to have confidence, [01:12.45]persistence, courage, [01:14.76]and an indomitable spirit. [01:17.05]So at nine years of age, [01:19.69]Wilma removed the leg brace and took the step [01:23.39]that the doctors told her she would never take normally. [01:26.56]In four years she could run, [01:29.96]which was a medical wonder. [01:32.25]Then Wilma began to have the unbelievable idea [01:36.62]that she would become the world’s greatest woman runner. [01:40.03]At 13, she entered a race. [01:43.40]She entered every race in high school, [01:46.46]and in every race she came in last. [01:49.32]Everyone thought she should stop competing! [01:52.70]However, one day she came in second to last. [01:56.74]Later she won a race. [01:59.16]From then on, [02:00.48]Wilma won every race that she entered. [02:03.64]Wilma went to Tennessee State University, [02:06.91]where she met a coach named Ed Temple. [02:10.10]The coach believed that she had a great talent. [02:13.37]He trained her so well that she could go to the Olympic Games. [02:17.96]There she competed against the greatest woman runner of the day, [02:22.55]a German girl named Jutta Heine. [02:25.63]Nobody had ever beaten Jutta. [02:28.57]But in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash, Wilma won. [02:34.48]Finally came the 400-meter relay. [02:38.52]The first two runners on Wilma’s team [02:41.31]made perfect handoffs with the stick. [02:43.77]But when the third runner handed the stick to Wilma, [02:47.00]she dropped it, [02:48.31]and Wilma saw Jutta taking off down the track. [02:51.37]It was impossible for anyone to catch this fast girl, [02:56.03]but Wilma did just that! |
