[00:00.00]Easter in Jackson 杰克逊的复活节 [00:05.25]The pounding rain began in the middle of the night. [00:09.65]The people of Jackson, [00:11.08]Ohio awoke to the sound then went back to sleep. [00:14.25]But the rain continued. [00:16.75]Statistics said Jackson floods once every one hundred years, [00:20.15]but no one believed this would be the flood of the century. [00:23.77]People were evacuated from their homes to higher ground, [00:27.59]leaving everything behind. [00:29.47]Buildings in the low-lying areas were immersed in water. [00:32.95]People felt helpless as they watched Mother Nature show her power. [00:37.47]Susan told the story to her students [00:40.30]and showed them pictures from the newspaper. [00:42.70]Immediately her students began raising money for the flood victims. [00:47.18]They sold lollipops, [00:48.94]wrote letters to the community asking for donations [00:52.23]and collected their own money. [00:53.97]Mountains of clothes, furniture and food piled up. [00:57.80]Susan’s class made Easter baskets from shoe-boxes [01:01.31]and filled them with candy and toys [01:03.70]as well as toothpaste, soap, toothbrushes and shampoo. [01:07.33]Susan and I drove there with these baskets. [01:10.39]We went from house to house, [01:12.15]knocking on doors, ready to begin our mission. [01:15.08]“Hello,I’m Susan Moore, [01:17.39]and this is my friend,Allison. [01:19.12]My sixth-graders at Pennyroyal Elementary made Easter baskets [01:23.50]for you when they heard about the flooding.” [01:25.47]Their faces lit up as they opened their gifts. [01:28.63]As we entered one home, [01:30.62]a husband and wife were crouched over their floor with hammer and nails. [01:34.33]When he opened the box,he began to cry. [01:36.74]“I can’t believe those kids did this. [01:39.35]Let me give you some money for their school.” [01:41.89]As I glanced at what was left of his home, [01:44.60]I could not believe his generous spirit. [01:46.92]He eventually conceded to write a thank-you note instead. [01:50.30]One woman ran out to find us after opening her box, [01:53.92]tears rolling down her face. [01:55.77]“I collected bunny rabbits, [01:57.96]and I lost them all in the flood. [02:00.03]There was a small pink rabbit in my box. [02:02.67]I can start my collection again. [02:04.73]Thank you.” [02:05.94]The burly man standing next to her also had tears in his eyes. [02:10.09]My heart was warmed as I played the small role of messenger [02:14.18]in this tribute to the good in the human spirit. [02:16.68]So often we hear of the shortcomings of our youth, [02:20.28]but these youngsters answered a cry for help [02:23.03]and gave proof that generosity and love prevail. |
