Around 7:15 tonight, we know that officer Campbell was in off-duty status, he's walking on the 4400 block of North Marshall with two individuals we believed to be accompanying him at that time. As they walked, these males approached. They announced a robbery. During the robbery, the taller male fired his handgun. The officer was hit in the left leg, and he was down at the scene. The other individual, one of the other individuals was shot one time in the head. He was pronounced at the scene.

We are very hopeful of course for officer Campbell, who was in off-duty situation, but he's one of ours and we’re very concerned about his status.

It's very unfortunate to be here. But right now, the officer is in surgery. His family is here at the hospital. We're all standing by and hopefully he’ll pull through. But again, this is just one more example of the kind of violence that takes place all too often on our streets.

This is again, the kind of senseless violence that is taking place on our streets, whether with on-duty or off-duty police officers and civilians. That continues to drive us to try to drive down crime in Philadelphia. We’ve had some successes, but this is again an unfortunate example of some of the dangers that people and police officers face on a regular basis.
