A right-wing conservative President Kaczynski let his personality show through in portions of a CNN interview in 2008, asked how he felt about Portland co-hosting the European football championship in 2012, on the heels of a winless appearance in 2008 competition.

Well, we had a bad message this year, I think I would say the Poland is a peaceful country that everyday life is simple there, this is a country where there is a huge interest in football, and the European football, like the American way.

The trip to Russia was meant to further cement ties between Warsaw and Moscow and ended in tragedy. It may also end up uniting the Polish people as they look for a way forward.
