China’s top planning agency is asking the country’s state-owned energy companies to increase production and import of natural gas to guarantee winter supply of heating.
Economists1 from PetroChina say it will need more than 70 billion cubic meters of gas this winter, but the company can only meet 80 percent of the demand. As cities across China are required to cut down smog and haze2 by shifting from fuel to natural gas, the country faces greater pressure of supplying natural gas this season. The National Development and Reform Commission is asking the energy companies to declare their gas shortages and provide details on how they will meet the shortages.
