Protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban told thousands of supporters Monday night they would continue their campaign until they win or lose, placing no time limit upon the shutdown.
"This ’Shutdown Bangkok’ will go on until we know whether we have won or lost. There is no time limit," said Suthep Thaugsban, protest leader.
Tens of thousands of Thai anti-government protesters occupied parts of central Bangkok, forcing the resignation of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. They met no resistance from the authorities. Police and soldiers kept a low profile as the "Shutdown Bangkok, Restart Thailand" drive got under way in the city of about 12 million people. Although major intersections1 were blocked, city trains and river ferries were operating, most shops were open and motorbikes plied2 the roads freely. Protesters said they were prepared for a long haul to tighten3 the noose4 on the capital, suggesting the crisis could drag on for days, if not weeks, threatening to inflict5 substantial damage on Southeast Asian country.
