Lawmakers in Ukraine have met in Parliament to discuss whether to hold a national referendum on federalization.
Acting1 Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov also gave a statement on the current situation in the country. A more federal structure of governance has been touted2 as a possible political reform as an olive branch to pro-Russia activists3 in the country’s east.
Earlier, on Monday, Pro-Russia activists clashed with protesters holding a pro-Ukraine rally in the eastern city of Donetsk. Police attempted to hold back the pro-Russians, some of whom had bats and shields, but then largely stood aside as dozens of protesters were battered4.
The European Union has released the names of 15 new targets of sanctions because of their alleged5 roles in the Ukraine crisis. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak and pro-Russia activists' leaders in Crimea and the eastern Ukrainian cities of Lugansk and Donetsk were also on the list.
