Only 14 people have been rescued so far and 6 bodies have been recovered as rescue efforts continue after a passenger ship sank late Monday night, on a section of the Yangtze River in central China's Hubei province. Hundreds are still being searched for...most of them elderly. Authorities have held a news conferencing, giving the latest on the rescue operation.
"Over 110 vessels1 are nearby, including many civilian2 boats. They were called here immediately. Thousands of troops and police have been mobilized. Traffic control has been enforced on this section of the Yangtze river. Divers3 have been working around the clock. Medical workers are standing4 by. We will expand our area of operation, seize every little hope to save lives, not wasting any second. The rescue force will be strengthened. We will apply more technologies into the operation," Chinese Transport Minister Yang Chuantang said.
"At present the divers are playing the most important role. 13 of them are currently at the scene. 120 more have been deployed5 from the Navy branches and will be sent to the site by helicopters. Tonight, 90 divers will arrive there. And the Guangzhou military region is sending 50 more," Hubei military region commander Chen Shoumin said.
"So altogether there would be 183 for the underwater search mission. Premier6 Li Keqiang has asked us to divide the divers into groups and conduct non-stop rescue. All in all, we've got enough personnel and will moblise them as needed.
Rescuers are still battling strong winds and downpour to hunt for the missing. One of the people rescued is an 85-year-old woman. A CCTV cameraman captured the moment she was brought back to shore.
The captain of the ship and the chief engineer are also among those rescued. But both have been detained by the police. There were 406 passengers on board, 5 travel agency workers and 47 crew. A local newspaper says most of the passengers were between the ages of 50 and 80.
