In Brussels, a series of explosions has killed up to 28 people. Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel says victims are being evacuated from the scene of the attacks at Brussels airport and a metro station.
"At the moment the evacuation of victims is ongoing and it is difficult to get the precise answers to the questions being posed because the emergency services will have to evaluate the precise situation in terms of the identity of the people concerned. This is also the case for the people who are not of Belgian nationality and for them their embassies are in contact with the Foreign Ministry so we can get answers," Michel said.
Two explosions ripped through the departure area of Zaventem airport on Tuesday morning. The cause of the explosions was not immediately confirmed. Flights and rail transport to the airport have been halted. Belgian media report that more bombs have been found in the airport.
Shortly after the airport explosions, another blast was reported at Maelbeek metro station in Brussels, close to European Union institutions. Belgian federal prosecutor said one of the attacks was probably carried out by a suicide bomber. The Brussels metro system has been closed. The explosions happened only days after the prime suspect in the November Paris attacks was arrested in Brussels.
