Mining giant Rio Tinto says the jailing of four employees, including Australian Stern Hu won't affect its relationship with China. Hu and three colleagues were found guilty of commercial spying and bribery¹ yesterday. Stern Hu's received a 10-year sentence while his colleagues penalties range from seven to 14 years. Rio Tinto's described the trio's actions as deplorable.

 

Labor's pulled further ahead of the Coalition² in the latest Newspoll, stretching its lead to 12 points on two-party terms. The poll also finds Kevin Rudd's Government are now considered superior economic managers over the Opposition³.

 

The Immigration Department says today's transfer of asylum⁴ seekers from Christmas Island has nothing to do with crowding at the detention⁵ centre. About 150 asylum seekers were moved to Sydney's Villawoods Centre in the last week. And more will leave Christmas Island today. The Opposition says capacity constraints⁶ at Christmas Island are pushing asylum seekers onto the mainland.

 

And Russian authorities suspect Islamist rebels from the North Caucasus region were behind yesterday's terrorist attacks on the Moscow metro⁷. Thirty-eight people were killed when two female suicide bombers⁸ carried out the attack at crowded stations in peak hour.
