 The Prime Minister has held talks with China's President Hu Jintao. The pair discussed closer defence and security ties between the two countries. And the Prime Minister once again raised China's human rights record. Ms Gillard will now fly to London to attend the royal wedding.

 

A team of UN investigators¹ is on the ground in Libya to inquire into human rights violations². The group will look at alleged³ abuses by the Gaddafi regime, as well as by the rebels and NATO forces. The government says it will cooperate with the inquiry⁴. The team will travel widely, visiting hospitals and prisons, and will talk to civilians⁵ and soldiers.

 

Rival Palestinian factions⁶ Hamas and Fatah have reportedly reached a landmark⁷ agreement to settle their various differences. Hamas rules in Gaza while Fatah controls the West Bank. The deal would allow the warring factions to form an interim⁸ unity⁹ government ahead of elections later in the year.

 

A 24-hour strike will shut ports along Australia's east coast on Saturday. Negotiations¹⁰ between the Maritime¹¹ Union and Patrick Stevedores¹² over pay and conditions have broken down. According to the Australian newspaper, ports in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne will close on Saturday with Fremantle docks to follow suit on Monday.

 

And with just one sleep to go before that wedding, Prince William and Kate Middleton have wrapped up their final rehearsal¹³ at Westminster Abbey. Large crowds craned to try to get a glimpse of the royal couple who swept by in a motorcade with blacked-out windows.
