 Thousands of people have gathered at candle-lit vigils around the country for the asylum¹ seeker who was killed on Manus Island last week. Twenty-three-year-old Iranian man Reza Berati died during a violence at a detention² centre last Monday. Immigration Minster Scott Morrison is under pressure after having to clarify his account of the events.

 

The new restrictions³ to help curb⁴ alcohol-fueled violence in Sydney have come into effect. Pubs and clubs in the city's main nightclub district are now subjected to 1:30 lockouts and last drinks at three a.m.

 

Ukraine's parliament has appointed the speaker as interim⁵ president just a day after ousting⁶ the former president Viktor Yanukovych. Thousands of people have poured into Independent Square to mourn the scores of protesters killed during last week's violence.

 

An explosion has killed at least two people and injured more than 20 others in the Thai capital Bangkok. A 12-year-old boy is among the dead. A blast went off outside a shopping mall where anti-government protesters were holding a rally. Earlier, a five-year-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting in the east of the country.

 

And Taliban militants⁷ have killed at least 20 Afghan soldiers at a checkpoint near the country's border with Pakistan. It's one of the deadliest attacks against the army in the past year. The Taliban also claimed to have captured seven soldiers.
