Well, a new report is proposing a radical1 overhaul2 to the way the Federal Government helps retirees which it says would also improve the budget bottom line. Left-leaning think tank the Australia Institute says pensions should be increased by more than 5,000 dollars a year and made available to everyone over retirement3 age.
It says all tax breaks on superannuation should be scrapped4 to pay for the plan. It claims the change would leave federal budget 13 billion dollars better off.
Japan's trade deficits6 quadrupled in March. Export growth slowed during the month and energy imports continued to rise.
The weak Japanese currency which pushed up the costs of imports also contributed to the wide big gap. The 14-billion-dollar deficit5 was up from just over 3.5 billion dollars from a year ago.
Let's look the markets.
Wall Street closed higher as investors7 prepare for key earnings8 releases. In London last week, the FTSE closed half a percent stronger.
West Texas Crude is trading at 104 US dollars a barrel. Tapis Crude is 115 dollars a barrel. Gold is trading at 1219 US dollars an ounce.
