 To the markets, Wall Street jumped on a pick-up in consumer confidence and positive company profit numbers: 

 

By the close of trade, the Dow Jones Industrial average added 187 points or 1.1%,  S&P 500 Index rose 1.2% or 23 points to 1985, and the Nasdaq surged 1.8 to end at 4,564. 

 

Looking at commodity prices: 

 

West Texas Crude is trading at 81 US dollars a barrel. And Tapis is at 89. Gold is trading at 1,228 US dollars an ounce. And the Aussie dollar is buying 88 US cents, 70 euro cents and 55 pence sterling¹.
