Good Morning, I'm Melissa Long, here at the CNN center in Atlanta on this Monday morning, November 9th. Here's a look at some of the stories that are happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
The families of three American hikers who were detained along the Iran and Iraq Border in July just got the news that their loved ones would be charged with espionage1 in Iran. This announcement comes a couple of days after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met privately2 with the family members of Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal.
Ida, the storm approaching the US Gulf3 Coast has been downgraded. No longer is it a Category one hurricane, it has already, however, made a mess in Nicaragua. It still will make landfall along the US Gulf coastline tomorrow morning. Forecasters say watch out for flooding, rough surf and possible tornadoes4. Now, the state of Louisiana has already been declaring a state of emergency.
Sixteen of the Fort Hood5 shooting victims are still in the hospital this morning, seven are in intensive care. This suspected shooter Major Nidal Hasan, is conscious and talking and off ventilator. Investigators6 are asking for help from anyone who was there during the shooting. They may have inadvertently left the scene with evidence such as fire arm residue7, or shell casings.
Turning attention to Health Care Reform and for Democrats8' moment of victory over the weekend. Their version of Health Care Reform complete with the government-run public insurance option has passed to the House. You are not gonna see much celebrating, however. This morning Republicans said the measure in its current form is dead on arrival as it moves on now to the US senate.
And ceremony is under way right now marking the 20th anniversary since the Berlin wall came down. Just a short time ago, a group of world leaders symbolically9 crossed the first bridge that opened back in 1989. There will be several other events, including a huge concert tonight. The highlight will be knocking over one thousand giant dominoes. That represents the domino effect the wall had in the collapse10 of communism.
Those are the headlines for you this hour. Do stay with us here at CNN.com for more on these stories or other news that develops today.
