Want to start today with a nod with my friend at L. county high school who visited CNN center yesterday.
It's great to see all of you. Welcome to CNN Student News. First up, this December 4th, the Syrian town of Kobani. You've heard us mentioned it before. It's right by Syria's northern border with Turkey. It's been targeted for months by ISIS terrorist groups which controls a third of Iraq and Syria but ISIS hasn't been able to take total control of Kobani. It's been hit by US led airstrikes. Americans and Syrian officials disagreed about whether theses airstrikes have been effective in stopping ISIS but the terrorists have also gotten strong resistance in Kobani by K. and other ethnic1 groups. All this has taken its toll2 in the border town. Some areas are just hips3 of rubble4. Previously5, we could only show you fighting there from our journalists who were across the border in Turkey. Now, with the help of some of those who are fighting ISIS, we are able to show you what is like inside Kobani.
We've been taken down the street towards the eastern frontline behind those Kurds they've put up to protect them from snipers by B. and M. who 2 of the female YPG fighters escorting us down there. And this is near the eastern front where there's much more intense fighting in the past 3 or 4 days and we got different figures from whom you've speak to hear about quite how much of this city is controlled. You see here the quite remarkable6 devastation7 caused by the explosive used. What's quite clear is that ISIS are far from giving up on this fight. In fact, try to take ground everyday. They move across the official border across 3 or 4 days ago. That was a substantial advance they tried. They were beaten back but each night, particularly last night, we had very intense clashes further down this streets toward this eastern frontier. You can hear... You can see the absolute devastation here as we get closer towards ISIS's positions here to the northeast of the city. Some of those caused by airstrieks but some, too, from the daily constant. Sometimes, every 5 minutes .... ,some home made by ISIS. They've been pounded on Kobani for months now. We can see Turkey eventually just behind us but here they through this wreckage8, closer and closer to the places ISIS are trying to push forwards.
